Vodka is one of the most drunk distilled beverages all over the world. It’s popularity has been rising and rising, the introduction of flavored Vodka’s has had a very big part in the popularity of vodka. In 2011 it’s a bit of trend to do a diet, strangely enough that becomes more and more. Therefore I would like to give an explanation about Vodka and the amount of calories in vodka. Things you should be aware of, for example; the amount of calories will go up when vodka is mixed with a soda.

Types of Vodka

There are literally dozens of types of Vodka, the amount of calories in vodka is really depending on what Vodka kind of Vodka you are drinking.

The main categories of Vodka are Clear Vodka and Flavored Vodka. It makes perfect sense to think that the amount of calories is higher in the flavored Vodka than in Clear Vodka. The additions in flavored vodka will contain some calories which makes clear vodka the lighter version of the two.

Basic Vodka

The basic is always Clear Vodka, a colorless drink with on average 40% of alcohol but sometimes up to 50%. Clear Vodka is often used in cocktails or is often mixed with some kind of soda. Some people drink it pure which is a difficult task on itself.

Flavoured Vodka

The other main categorie Vodka is Flavoured Vodka.  Originally created to mask the flavor of the Basic Vodka because as said, drinking Basic Vodka pure is a difficult task. At these times it looks like the distillers want to show what they are capable of producing Flavored Vodka. Some of the better known Flavored Vodka’s are:

  • Pertsovka
  • Kubanskaya
  • Zubrovka
  • Limonnaya

The Flavoured Vodka’s do seem to be bit less on the alcohol with an average around 60-proof.

Alcohol and Proof

In the United States, the proof of an alcoholic drink is twice its alcohol percentage at 60°F. So an 80-proof vodka contains 40% alcohol. In Europe a different proof system, called Gay-Lussac, is used; it is also the percentage of alcohol by volume, which is half the proof used in the US. The European Union has adopted Gay-Lussac proof as its standard.

Calories in Vodka

The amount of calories in vodka can be written down to the amount of calories in alcohol really. Vodka itself doesn’t contain  any carbs, fat or protein.  When mixing vodka with other beverages you need to take into account that the amount of calories will be pushed up by the drink Vodka gets mixed with.  I will give a few examples of Clear Vodka and Vodka being mixed (most popular drinks).
